Infrastructure Rehabilitation/ Construction of 7 Boreholes in the Galgaduud Region: A Key Step Toward Improving Access to Clean Water

Share On:

In response to the growing need for accessible clean water in Somalia, Daryeel Bulsho Guud (DBG) has successfully implemented an extensive WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) infrastructure rehabilitation and construction project in the Galgaduud Region. This initiative, its under the SIERP (Somali Integrated Emergency Response Project), aimed to enhance water availability in rural areas through the construction and rehabilitation of seven boreholes across various villages in the region.

The following improvements were made in each village:

  1. Muunad Village, Guriel District
  • Construction of an Elevated Water Tank: With a capacity of 40 cubic meters, the elevated water tank will ensure a consistent water supply to the community, particularly during dry spells.
  1. Xeraale District
  • Construction of Elevated Water Tanks: Three elevated water tanks, each with a 40 cubic meter capacity, were built in Towfiiq and Madiina villages to cater to the growing water demands.
  • Installation of Genset Engines: A 30KVA genset engine was installed to power the water supply system in Xeraale District, ensuring a reliable power source.
  • Submersible Water Pumps: An 11KVA submersible water pump was installed in Towfiiq village, providing a steady flow of water from underground sources.
  • Animal Trough Maintenance: Existing animal troughs in Towfiiq were maintained, improving water availability for livestock.
  1. Qoryo Cade Village, Adaado District
  • Construction of Generator and Guard Rooms: To ensure the safety and functionality of the new water systems, a generator and guard rooms were built to house and protect the equipment.
  • Installation of Genset Engines and Submersible Water Pumps: The installation of a 30KVA genset engine and an 11KVA submersible water pump will provide a stable water source for both human and animal consumption.
  • Installation of GI Pipes Class C: GI pipes were installed to improve the water distribution network, ensuring the efficient delivery of water to households and livestock.
  1. Galinsoor District
  • Construction of Elevated Water Tank: A 40 cubic meter elevated water tank was built to serve the needs of the local population.
  • Submersible Water Pump Installation: To ensure a continuous flow of water, a submersible water pump was installed.
  • Installation of GI Pipes Class C: To support water distribution, GI pipes were laid to connect the water source to households and communal areas.

The Impact

The SIERP project has significantly improved water access in the Galgaduud region, addressing the critical need for clean water, especially during periods of drought. The construction of elevated water tanks, installation of submersible pumps, and the development of reliable power sources have not only boosted access to safe water but also contributed to the overall well-being of the local population.

By providing sustainable water infrastructure, DBG’s efforts are contributing to the reduction of waterborne diseases, improving hygiene standards, and promoting health in these rural communities. Moreover, the maintenance of animal troughs ensures that livestock, a vital resource in this region, also benefit from reliable water supplies.

This initiative aligns with DBG’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of vulnerable communities and its broader mission to contribute to humanitarian and development goals across Somalia.

Looking Forward

As DBG continues to expand its impact through the SIERP project and similar initiatives, the goal is to further enhance water accessibility, promote sanitation practices, and support communities in building resilience to environmental challenges. This project serves as an important model for sustainable development, proving that targeted interventions can create lasting positive change for communities in need.
