Schools require latrines to ensure proper hygiene, sanitation, and a safe learning environment.  Latrines prevent open defecation, reduce the spread of diseases, and maintain cleanliness.  Separate latrines for boys and girls provide privacy and dignity, particularly for female students.  Access to latrines promotes attendance, retention, and overall well-being, while also creating a conducive learning environment.

DBG constructed 41 gender-sensitive school latrines with separate facilities for boys and girls with handwashing units in targeted schools in Kahda and Daynile districts of Banadir region.  This has had a significantly improved sanitation in the target schools.  DBG has made a significant contribution by creating a safe, healthy, and inclusive learning environment.  The constructed latrines are an investment that will support the holistic development of students, by promoting equality, healthy and a positive educational experience.

The construction of separate latrines for boys and girls ensures enhanced privacy and dignity for students. This separation created a conducive environment for students to feel comfortable and safe while using the facilities, promoting their overall well-being and confidence.

The presence of latrines ensured proper waste disposal and reduced the risk of open defecation.  This contributes to improved sanitation within the school premises, promoting a cleaner and healthier environment.  The latrines constructed has helped to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases, such as diarrhoea, cholera, and typhoid, which could have been prevalent in areas lacking proper sanitation facilities like the schools.  Improved sanitation facilities, including latrines has positively impacted on attendance rates and student retention.  The adequate and functional latrines in schools have improved regular attendance given the safe and convenient space that meets the students sanitation needs.
